Diversity and Inclusion - it’s not a Passing Fad!
The business case for diversity and inclusion in the workplace has become increasing important for competitive advantage within business. After one of the most challenging years its become clear that this is not a passing fad and businesses finally seem eager to create workplaces where employees are valued for their potential, regardless of their gender, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation or background.
However hiring diverse talent is not enough - it is the whole workplace experience thats shapes whether people remain and thrive as part of your organisation. It is for this reason employers should be just as conscious of equity as they are diversity and inclusion.
In todays war on talent, organisations need to focus on attracting a diverse talent pool of candidates who offer the best qualifications and experience. This requires employers to look beyond traditional talent acquisition and recruitment practices and take on new approaches to access more diverse talent pools. From a human capital perspective, organisations must be prepared to recognise the value of diversity, open up new talent pools and consider the use of different tools and ensure interview panels have diverse composition. Eliminating biased language and adopting culturally inclusive practice and language is a critical part of the selection process and we must all take steps to counter our unconscious bias.
Embedding diversity and inclusion into business practice has always made good business sense, research has shown it is a source of competitive and reputational advantage. Diversity and inclusion are firmly on the agenda for job seekers too, according to Deloitte, 67% of job seekers use diversity as an important factor when considering which company to work for.
